Had a storm wed nite. The house we slept in broke away from one of its rope moorings and we kind of floated around in the lake tied to one tree..Lots of excitement in total darkness.

Enclosed a pic of the local chief and. He likes to drink" Rice water" aka rice wine brewed locally. This trip I bruoght a bottle of Australian Shiraz which we shared making us friends forever Ain't life grand........nase

Monday #1

Hi kids, all is well here. Weekend was relaxing Rained daily this is the rainy season and the lake is filling up.
Tomorrow- tues= we go to a different village which is 7 hours travel by boat. we still don't have big boat yet but hopefully by next week it will be ready to go

The Cambodian people are extemely gracious lots of bowing and such

Food is interesting lots of rice but flavored with diff. vegies and fish as well. Fish are small and mainly for flavor..No steaks or roasts like in Alaska. I understand why people are small compared to Americans. so far i am loving it except for the language but that is my problem...all for now...catch up this weekend ....bye....love...nase

PS. hope to do the temples this weekend...Buddha is waiting for me!!!!!!!!

Series #3

Hi all,
I figure that last post should generate a few comments, especialy since the kids always
tell me to be careful in the future i will wet the bed
the second, day we saw about 45-50 patients lots of great kid photos
the people are very poor.they eat lots of rice and the fish they catch with lots of natural seasonings that float by their homes. I am trying to send photos but computer is not to co-op. spent Thursday am at clinic an then travelled back to city Friday I slept off and on and today venturing out in the city.
Hopefully will have better wifi on Monday at the local office
.
BTW TLC stands for the lake clinic.
Check out their website at www.thelakeclnic,org
Bye for now jerry n

Series #2-- I made quite a SPLASH

So we have lunch first-very important with these folks and then see about 30 patients in clinic Then dinner and it gets dark at 6pm and no electricity. they have a generator and watch TV for about a 1/2 hour in evening. then you go to sleep.
Some of us have to pee at night.the outhouse is in te next buildng.an connected by a small footbridge about 18 incheswide made of tree brancchees. My big moment soon folowed when i fell off the bridge into the Tonle Sap lake.
needless to say I woke everyone up. fortunately the chief grabbed me and helped me out-lost my LED flashlight as well as my pride
Didn't geet much sleep after that Oh well...end of dy # 1...j

a series of entries #1

Hi folks,
It is Saturday here in Siem Reap. My first crack at local wi fi at a joint called the blue pumpkin.
I will try to enter a daily blog even tho they will come to you in clumps and I can't remember all that hapend but will try. By the way, my keyboardsticks and skips sopleasbe kind to me if my spelling sucks
I left Alaska on sat am and arrived in Siem Reap (SR) on Monday at 11:30 pm. Slept for about 4 hours and got up at 5 am to meet the team at 0600. We had us(5 people) and 2 folks from UN Development program were doumenting existing health care on the tonle sap lake ( not much except these guys-TLC).
So we travelfor about 4hours by small boat to get to first spot for clinic.
Rainy season is on but we can only get to villages that are actually on the lakemore in next entry...love...j

No Place like home

As they say the more things change the more they stay the same. Needed some coffee, this AM. Around the corner is dunkin donuts. Very nice man but you can't get away from some things.
Found a neighborhood BAR last night and enjoyed a CAFRI (local beer)-not bad.
Check out of airport hotel is noon & I fly at 7:00 pm. oh well I will get to know the airport a little better...later...... jerry

made it to Seoul

Good evening. Kind of warm and moist here. Seoul is 15 hours ahead of Alaska so it is Sunday night about 9 PM. Here for 24 hours until I leave for Siem Reap tomorrow night.
Will get in around 10:30 PM and then head for work on the lake at 0600 on Tuesday morning.

Hopefully will have some access to wifi this coming weekend. See you then If you get a chance look at their blog at www.lakeclinic.org . Also a great video from there that is fairly current

See you in the funnies...jerry

Ready to fly!!!

Hi Kids, Time is a wastin'

Leaving tonight for Cambodia. Will be working with an NGO there called TLC (the lake clinic).

Their thrust is maternal-child health but they see everyone. I will be going out on boat either 3 or 4 days each week to villages along the perimeter of the Tonle Sap Lake or to actual floating villages . These folks are pretty poor and don't have very good access to care so this group goes to them. If someone needs hospitalization the closest spot would be Siem Reap. Hope to spend some time doing some sight seeing at the Anghor (sp?) Wat temple area as well as possibly a side trip to Bangkok, Thailand , if time permits.

At this time -the rainy season- it has been pretty dry there so it may get interesting-boats get stuck, etc..We'll see.

Supposedly there is Wi Fi access in Siem Reap so I hope to be able to blog from there at least on weekends. Doubt much blogging on the lake.

Anyway comment as you may if I write something real goofy.

Next stop---CAMBODIA!!!! jerry
P.S. Photos above from Last years Kenya/ Tanzania trip (kind of Mat/ child health oriented-don't you think?? The one on the right just happens to be favorite of mine . they make jewelry (bracelets) out of those hairs!!!!

Gettin' Ready to fly

Good day, it is Tuesday morning and I just finished the newspaper in beautiful downtown Anchorage. Peds. Rounds begin at 0830 and I better go learn something. This note is just a ploy to post a few more pictures of recent china, St.lucia and granddaughter photos of Miss Lilah...be well...kids...love..jerry
Pics of Miss Lilah on 4th b-day, Breadfruit baking (burning) on the grill in St. Lucia and last but not least a Caucasian face on a Terra Cotta warrior. Apparently some American dude wanted his resemblance on a life sized statue. they made 2 -sold him one and kept the other at the warrior museum area. Some strange folks on this planet...nase
(ALL OTHER FACES ARE ASIAN WITH EYES CLOSED. ALL OTHER FACES ARE DIFFERENT ON EACH WARRIOR UNEARTHED SO FAR )

A few more pics from China and St. Lucia

Hi, a few more photos . I haven't really figured out how to post on snapdragon or shutterbug or any of those spots yet
Pics of some unknown Chinese folks who just enjoy taking pics with funny looking white guys in them. also the egg delivery person and a shot of boys being boys at the great wall....more later....j

Long Time No type

Hi Guys,

It has been a long time since I looked at this site. The reason today is that I leave this week for Cambodia and a month of working on a boat attending to some of the local Khmer and Vietnamese folks in the area

More about that later!!!!!

The preceding blog entry in May was well intentioned but unsuccessful. After repeated attempts to log on to this site in May I realized that China and Gooogle were feuding and blogspot was off limits from China.

Anyway Iwas there for about 2.5 weeks. Went with about 11 couples and got some great babes and met another group of fine folks, most from the east coast.

Went to Beijing, Nanchang, Guangzhou and spent the last Three days in Xian (alone) which is the spot famous for the unearthing of the Terra Cotta warriors. That was really amazing and it is quite a "go to" spot for tourists mainly from China but all over the world as well.

I took about a zillion photos, Met some more good Chinese folks.

In August I spent 4 weeks back in St. Lucia at St. Jude Hospital. I have been going there since 2002 and it was great once again EXCEPT that the temp was in the 90s and the Humidity about 2000% or so. Us" fat boys" from alaska don't really do to well in those conditions.

Some of you may remember that the hospital there burned down last November-2009-. three patients died in the fire. Since then they have moved the operation beneath the stands at the local football stadium in Vieux Fort. This was ok but not the greatest locale. Anyway they started to rebuild the old hospital this minth. They originally talked about a new hospital but I am not sure how realistic that prospect treally is. The rebuilding will be a joint venture with the folks from Taiwan (long political story)

Met up with lots of old friends from St. Lucia. There volunteer program was down for a while after the fire but I went down to spell a lady peds doc who took several months off for maternity leave.

So too make a long story short I am off to Cambodia for a" new do"

Have some good thoughts for me and i will see if I can get this blog to work again. Not sure about internet in Cambodia but when I write to them they always write back. have a good September/October. Be well...jerry
